Six questions came up repeatedly this quarter. Here are the answers, with the measurements behind them where we have any.
"Will a topper fix my sagging mattress?"
No, and this is the most common misconception we are asked about.
A topper sits above the problem. If the support core has developed a permanent indentation, your hips drop into that indentation and the topper follows them down. What you gain is a slightly softer surface on a mattress that is still failing to hold your spine in line.
Toppers work well for one thing: a mattress that is structurally sound but too firm. If your straight-edge test shows under half an inch of sag and you are waking with shoulder pressure, a two- or three-inch topper is a $200 fix for a $1,500 problem. The replacement guide has the test.
"Is a Split King worth it if we disagree on firmness?"
If the disagreement is more than about a point and a half on a ten-point scale, yes. Below that, a medium-firm compromise around 6 to 6.5 annoyed our testers least.
The cost is a seam down the middle and, usually, a few hundred dollars. Most couples stop noticing the seam within a fortnight; a minority never do. Note that a Split Queen is not a standard product — King is the entry point for split firmness.
"Can I put my mattress on an adjustable base?"
Usually. Three things to check:
- Profile. Above about 14 inches, a mattress starts to resist bending and the head-raise angle you actually get is less than the base is capable of.
- Perimeter construction. Rigid foam edge rails, used in some hybrids for edge support, can crease permanently when bent. Pocketed coil perimeters are fine.
- Warranty. Most brands explicitly allow adjustable bases; a few require a specific model. Check before you buy, because using a non-approved base voids the warranty everywhere we have read.
Latex and thick coil-on-coil mattresses are the two constructions most likely to be a poor fit.
"Does a mattress protector make the bed hotter?"
A waterproof one does, by about 0.9°F on the eight-hour surface rise in our measurements. That is larger than the benefit of most cooling covers, which we measured separately.
A cotton terry protector without a waterproof membrane made no difference we could detect. If you do not specifically need waterproofing, that is the one to buy.
"How long should I wait before deciding a mattress is wrong?"
Four weeks for anything support-related. One week for pressure problems.
Lower-back stiffness in the first fortnight on a new supportive mattress is usually adaptation and usually resolves. Shoulder pressure and a numb arm on your side is a firmness mismatch and will not resolve. The distinction matters because the trial windows are shorter than people think.
"Why is your top-rated mattress not your best value?"
Because they are different questions, and we score them separately.
The Saatva Classic scores 9.4 overall and 8.6 on value. The DreamCloud Premier scores 8.6 overall and 9.4 on value. Neither number is wrong: one mattress is better, the other gives you more per dollar, and which matters more depends on your budget rather than on the mattresses.
If the budget is the binding constraint, start from the best under $1,200 ranking rather than the overall one.
